The American airline United Airlines will remove at least 30 percent of all office workers. The company wants to save on costs in this way, as passenger flights are hardly ever carried out anymore due to the corona pandemic.
In an internal memo, viewed by Bloomberg news agency, human resources chief Kate Gebo reports to employees that United Airlines does not expect a rapid recovery from the crisis. The job reductions among administrative and managerial staff would involve some 3,500 jobs.
Airlines in the United States can still use government support to pay salaries. The United Airlines announcement indicates that more job losses in aviation can be expected at a later stage, once aid dries up.
