TikTok has been downloaded three billion times on iOS and Android worldwide, according to figures from Sensor Tower. This makes the video app, according to the analysts, the fifth app that has been installed so often, excluding games.
Facebook, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram are all apps that Facebook owns. Among the three billion downloads, Sensor Tower also included the Chinese version of TikTok, called Douyin.
In the first half of this year, TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide and the one that made the most money. For example, TikTok was first installed 383 million times worldwide and people spent 919.2 million dollars (over 775 million euros) on it.
TikTok is especially popular among young people. The app allows them to make short videos; often users dance or lipsync well-known songs. Garbage to be honest, but is seems to be popular.
The number of downloads cannot be translated one-on-one to the number of TikTok users. How many people are actively using the app, parent company ByteDance does not disclose. However, a Wall Street Journal article last month revealed that Bytedance has two billion active users spread across all its platforms. In addition to TikTok, Bytedance also owns The News app Jinri Toutiao.
In total, people have now spent 2.5 billion dollars on TikTok, writes Sensor Tower. Since 2014, only sixteen non-gaming apps have raised more than $ 1 billion. Only Tinder, Netflix, YouTube and Tencent Video have yielded more than $ 2.5 billion.
Just last year, TikTok was identified as a threat to the national security of the United States by then US president Donald Trump. He eventually failed to block the app. The current President, Joe Biden, finally cancelled that plan in June.
