EC gives green light to massive aid package for KLM

The European Commission has approved the French government’s billions in aid to the airline Air France, which is in distress because of the corona crisis. Air France, part of airline group Air France-KLM, will receive EUR 7 billion through a loan and state guarantees on loans.

“The aviation sector is important because of the employment opportunities and the connections it provides,” said Vice-President Margrethe Vestager of Competition. “For example, looking at the corona crisis, Air France played an important role in bringing back citizens stranded at their holiday destinations and in transporting medical equipment.”

The French state’s support will provide Air France with enough money to survive the virus outbreak, Vestager said. The vast majority of Air France’s fleet is currently grounded due to travel bans.

The Netherlands, in turn, allocates 2 to 4 billion euros to help KLM through the corona crisis.
