Every week, thousands of refugees, sometimes under appalling conditions, arrive in Italy. European countries expect an increase in the number of asylum seekers this year. In Cyprus and Austria, the largest number of asylum applications are made within the EU.
The Italian authorities are sounding the alarm: more and more refugees are crossing the Mediterranean Sea. The number of migrants in March was already almost as high as last year in the middle of summer, and almost ten times as high as in March last year. In a month, more than 13 thousand refugees, after an often life-threatening journey, arrived in Italy. In 2022, such numbers were counted only in June.
The least asylum applications were in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Portugal and Poland.
