iPhone maker Apple works on its own modem chips for mobile devices. This is What Johny Srouji, who leads Apple’s development of its own chips, has told the company’s staff, writes Bloomberg based on the insider info.
Modem chips, which use the phone to connect to mobile networks, are still taking the tech giant away from companies like Qualcomm. A high-profile conflict with that company over license terms already led to rumors that Apple wanted to make its own modems.
Those rumors got stronger last summer, Apple took over the 5G branch of Intel. A few months earlier, Apple settled the dispute with Qualcomm, whereby the iPhone maker licensed the chip maker’s products for six years with the possibility to extend it by another two years. That already led to the idea that Apple wants to create its own fashion chips by 2025.
Apple has been making its own processors for the iPhones and iPads for years. This year’s laptops, with self-designed processors, and by the end of 2022 all of the computers that Apple makes use of its own chips.
