Vitesse does everything to get rid of Roman Abramovich connection

V

Vitesse has to answer to the KNVB about the role of Roman Abramovich. Late last month, The Guardian reported that the wealthy Russian, who spent a lot of money in Chelsea for years, would have secretly financed the Arnhemmers.

Information accessed by The Guardian would show that oligarch Abramovich allegedly transferred at least 117 million euros to finance the acquisition of the Arnhem club in 2010 by Merab Jordania. The new information comes from the ‘Oligarch files’, leaked data from service provider MeritServus in Cyprus. In addition to The Guardian, The British bureau of Investigative Journalism also had access to the documents.

Vitesse goes a little deeper into the state of affairs on the website. The revelations of the British newspaper delay the takeover. “We are in frequent contact with the KNVB on this complex matter. As you know, we recently submitted the new total package of documents there,” said Peter Rovers, the general manager ad interim, about the acquisition, which is still not completed.

“In the meantime, the licensing committee has also met, with ‘Vitesse’ as the agenda item. However, before the members will discuss the submitted documents, we are expected to answer a number of questions following the recent publication of The Guardian. We will do that as well and as quickly as possible. It is expected that the assessment process will be delayed as a result, but it is of course also in our interest that this is done carefully.”

Two weeks ago Rovers reported that the full package of documents has been submitted to the Licensing Office of the KNVB. “The members of the licensing committee will meet in mid-April to discuss the submitted documents,” Rovers said. That will probably be later now.

For Vitesse it is a turbulent time. The club recently had a conflict over the lease of stadium Gelredome. In addition, from a sporting point of view, things are not going as hoped. Vitesse is the number 13 of the Eredivisie.
