Tourists startled by hours of explosions in Cyprus

Tourists in Northern Cyprus were shocked after a fire broke out in an ammunition store. There were hours of explosions. A nearby hotel had to be evacuated on Thursday as a precaution.

The explosions at the base near Girne continued into the early hours of the morning. Police say no one was injured. In the meantime, the fire in the military complex is said to be under control. Nothing has yet been announced about the cause.

The Acapulco Hotel in the area is said to have been damaged, but it is unclear how serious it is.

“Most importantly, everyone is unharmed,” said Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci during a visit to the building.

The affected area is located on the north coast of the island, in the part occupied by Turkish troops in 1974. As a country, this is not recognized by the international community.
