The European Parliament voted by a large majority on Thursday for new rules that should limit the power of large internet companies and better protect consumers.
The so-called Digital Services Act (DSA) regulates, among other things, the removal of messages with unwanted content, mandates transparency about the operation of algorithms and prohibits the collection of information from users about health, sexual orientation or political preference.
Parliament is now negotiating final legislation with the member states and the European Commission. That could take a few months.
