For the first time in a hundred years, more Roman Catholics than Protestants live in Northern Ireland

This is shown by figures published on Thursday from a large population survey. The Census census says that now 45.7 percent of Northern Ireland’s residents are Roman Catholic, versus 43.5 percent Protestant. The census was held in March 2021.

Relations between Roman Catholics and Protestants remain tense. The shift could have long-term political implications when it comes to Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom and its relationship with Roman Catholic Ireland.
