Cyprus has authorized the arrival of an intervention team from the United States. That should go to evacuate Americans in the region if the situation requires it.
The government of the small EU member state gave “permission to temporarily deploy a rapid response team to Cyprus. That should evacuate US diplomatic missions and US citizens in the region if necessary,” said a government spokesman. The request to locate the team on the island near Turkey was allegedly received through the United States Embassy.
The announcement follows Iranian missile attacks on bases in Iraq used by US troops. They followed the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, who was one of the most powerful men in Iran. He was killed in a US drone attack in Iraq last week.
