The Korean conglomerate Hyundai is negotiating to take over a robot maker Boston Dynamics from the Japanese tech investor Softbank. That’s what Bloomberg News Agency reports based on insider information. According to sources, the deal would be worth a billion dollars. Boston Dynamics is known for its two-legged humanoid Atlas robot and the four-legged animal robots Spot and BigDog.
Boston Dynamics has its roots at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and was previously a developer of robots for potential military use. Google bought the company in 2013 and sold it to Softbank four years later.
Boston Dynamics is said to be making no profit. Videos of the company’s robots have been watched millions of times on YouTube and it is perhaps the only financial result of the company. Hyundai makes robots for industrial use.
